Rebecca,

I hadn't heard about that until your comment. Obviously she has mental issues. I hope that she and especially the children get the help that they need. There are many who are misguided in their faith.

I believe in reconciling faith and reason. In this particular case, the mother and whoever her "superior" was did not do that. There is no biblical evidence that would support such an assertion. Just because someone wants something to happen doesn't mean that God is bound to do it. To think otherwise is foolish.

It seems to me that this is a clear case of not facing reality or some other heinous reason for not admitting her death. Even if this event had happened in the past, there is no reason to believe that it should have happened at that time. This would also be true of someone today standing in front of a rock waiting on water to pour out.

In those cases where the parents withhold medical care because they are waiting on a miracle, there are problems with that approach. I believe that God has given us the ability to help people with the use of medical technology. To deny them that is problematic for me. As humans, we have been given the ability to reason and to develop things that improve our lives. I am not sure how denying care shows God's sovereignty.

The basic problem is that everything that is in scripture is not normative. Some things were just recorded because that is what happened. The point of that passage of scripture is not to teach about desert survival, but trusting one's life to God.
